My experience in photography: I take pictures for this magazine since 1979.
From 1979 to 2002 I developped thousand of pictures in dark room, including the
developpements (manually) of the negatives black & white and the developpements
(manually) of the pictures on positive paper. Since 2002, I use numeric
cameras, in turn: the Nikon Coolpix 5000,  the Olympus FE-240, the Fuji F-200,
the Fuji F-300, the Fuji F-550 and the Sony HX9V. I also draw caricatures for this
magazine. Here is my caricatures website: http://michaeljournal.org/juvdm/caricatures.html

Model: DSC-HX9V
Digital compact camera
High-performance Cyber-shot™
16.2 megapixels Exmor R™, 7.5 cm LCD, GPS,
High-power 16x zoom from 24 mm wide angle to telephoto,
Smooth, cinematic Full HD 50p movie recording,
Shoot amazing 3D images and panoramas

I red that it's the best compact for 2011 for the pictures, and
videos HD, see this link. And this link. I tested the videos
and its focus very well zooming during recording.
See the videos at the bottom of this page.
And the flash is working at its full strenght.
And the mode macro is working super fine.
It focus faster and better than the Fuji-F550.
And inside no flash even at high ISO the
Sony-HX9V is as good as the Fuji-F550.
And it makes sharper pictures than the Fuji-F550.

For the videos: I use only this resolution:
1-Shooting setting / Movie Format: "AVCHD 60i/60p"
2-Menu / Movie quality: "HQ (AVC HD 9M)
standard image quality 1440 x 1080 60i"
and I read with VLC Player.
(because my computer has only a processor
AMD 6000 and 2 gig of ram....)
Video-horses.mts (HQ-AVC-HD-9M: 41 meg)

For the pictures: I use the mode P only for inside with or without flash:
---Without flash I set ISO at 800 if it gives a speed of 1/40 or more,
if not I set ISO at 1600 which gives a picture with not too much noise.
---With flash I set ISO at 400 to get a speed of at least 1/40.
If my subject is far I set ISO at 800. If I'm close to the subject,
I set ISO at 100 or 200 ISO.
My favorites settings for inside:
Sharpen: "Plus", give a sharper picture.
Saturation: "Standard", gives enough details in dark aeras.
Color mode: "Real", gives more details in dark aeras
and faces less red. Contrast: "Standard".
To see some pictures taken with those settings, see
page 3.
If I am not in a hurry and I want to enlarge details, I use 16 megapixels
because the processing of each picture in 16 megapixels is longer.
If I am in a hurry I use 10 megapixels.

The mode Superior Auto for outside:
I like to use this mode most of the times.

The mode Intelligent is also good for outside but it recognize
less scenes than the mode Superior Auto.

The mode Landscape gives more colorful pictures.

The mode HDR Backlight is good for outside when the sun is
in front of the camera, and sometimes for inside when there
is a window at the back of the subject, but the
subject must not move.

Superior Auto, 10 megapixels, 1/160, F8.0, ISO: 100,
in certain cases this mode takes many pictures and combine them into a
single one and the process can be slower, specially if it's dark, but
I think it's the best mode to take pictures outside:

Intelligent Auto, 10 megapixels, 1/1000, F3.3, ISO: 100,
takes a single picture and process faster, but recognize less
scenes than the mode Superior Auto:
