Here is a letter written by our great apostle of Saint John, N.B., Mr. Alyre Richard, that was published in the Feb. 11, 1998 issue of "The Times Globe" of Saint John, New Brunswick. Even on crutches, Mr. Richard manages to leave his home and go from door to door to solicit subscriptions to our "Michael" Journal. What an example to all!

I want to talk about the confusion that exists among politicians and media with regard to ends and means. One example of this is the politics of job creation.
Common sense tells us that it is impossible to increase the number of jobs when you consider the constant layoffs and automation which replaces manpower.
Industry does not exist to supply jobs. The purpose of industry is to supply products, not jobs. It does provide employment, but it does not create it. To create a job equates to digging a hole and refilling it, while industry supplies production and renews stocks as quickly as they are sold. It carries out its function very well. Let us not ask it to do something else. The fact about industry is that modern technology has eliminated much manual work, and progress is not designed to punish people.
Some will hasten to ask that if there is no jobs for everyone, how will the unemployed manage to live? This problem is not the concern of industry. It does not exist to distribute wages, nor to hire people. It only exists to supply the goods that are required by human needs.
The problem lies in the financial system... It was invented to facilitate the exchange of goods and services, and it is a good invention that we must keep, but it does not accomplish what it is designed to do, because it has been perverted. It has effected an unpayable debt that has practically choked our economy, and, unless there is a radical change in our finances, we are headed for a financial disaster like we've never seen before. Currently, there is 15 times more debt owed by individuals and institutions than there is money to pay for it.
Once again, there is confusion from the politicians. They pretend to pay the debt by taxation, which only serves to create the inflation of prices. The governor of the Bank of Canada increases interest rates to curb inflation, and it does exactly the opposite. In fact, interest is the real cause of inflation.
Our problem is nothing else than a problem of money. Our country has the potential to produce many times the needs of the population, and yet, a great number of Canadians are suffering from the lack of food, poor lodging, etc., in front of mountains of production that is left unsold and destroyed simply because of a lack of money.
The only solution is for our Government to abide by our Constitution of 1867, and to take back its power to issue credit debt free for the country. The power to issue money is a sovereign act that belongs only to Parliament, but which was illegally given to private banks.
I will not elaborate on the banking system, but I will say that it is the real cause of taxation. We are led to believe that taxes are used to build roads for welfare recipients and other public uses but, in reality, they are used to pay interest to the banks, and we have to borrow always at interest to fulfill our needs. Money created by the Bank of Canada debt free would achieve the same results.
When you talk about money creation, there are always some parrots who will repeat that this would cause inflation. I ask them: what money would cause inflation, money created by the Bank of Canada, interest free, or money created by private banks, with interest?
Our situation is not as complicated as the politicians would have us believe. Anything that is man-made can be changed by a decision to change it. Most importantly, one must remember that we are dependent on Almighty God. He created us with needs, and in His Divine Providence, He has provided for our needs in abundance. He gave man knowledge to produce goods many times more than the needs of the population, but there are millions who suffer hunger, and millions who die of starvation, every year. These problems are willed by the manipulators of money who have no regard for justice, and who are God's greatest enemies.
With these facts in mind as Christians, we have a responsibility to God to do our part for His justice the best way we know. The best way is to proclaim the truth. If we look for truth, we will find it, and "the truth will set you free," said Our Lord.
