Someone gave a blessed Miraculous Medal to one of the prisoners, but we don’t know who it was. Even though the prisoner rejected the gift of the medal, Claude Newman accepted the grace and was drawn to wear it. Countless conversions resulted because of his story. That someone, whoever it was, planted the seeds of faith! If that unknown person had not acted out of love to plant the seed, this miraculous story would never have taken place.
Each of us can be that person, an intercessor who plants seeds. In the Church’s history there are many individuals who have spread the faith through their personal efforts. “Let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins” (James 5:20). We are indeed our brothers’ keepers.
Today, as I write this, I received a call from someone I have not seen or spoken with in ten years. He shared that he was converting to Catholicism and thanked me for the example of faith he was given in our home ten years earlier. We were preparing to recite the Rosary as a family and invited him to join us. Afterwards, I gave him a Rosary which he had kept in the intervening years. The seed of faith was planted and remained with him. It came to fruition in God’s time.
